2022 Matteri Vineyard Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes

Comprised of two great Pinot Noir clones - Pommard and Dijon 777 - this Pinot Noir showcases deep, dark color, foreshadowing this wine's intense, tightly-wound nature. Aromas and flavors are incredibly concentrated and pure with black cherry juice, plum skins, and black raspberry layered with graphite and polished tannins. The finish is perfectly balanced with a complex mix of dark fruit, black tea, and spices. 200 cases were made!

About Matteri Vineyard

Owned and tended by Dr. Robert Matteri, a neighbor not far from our Mount Richmond Vineyard, Matteri Vineyard sits on a hilltop just north of Pike Road at 550 feet of elevation. Following his Great Uncle's footsteps, who had a small Pre-Prohibition vineyard in Sonoma, Dr. Matteri retired from his medical practice, began planting in 2011, and further expanded the vineyard in 2014 and 2015.

Although the vines are still relatively young, we've been extremely impressed with the fruit from the site's free-draining marine soils, creating dark, concentrated Pinot Noir and mineral-laced Chardonnay.

2022 Vintage

A year that kept us guessing, 2022 was an unusual vintage in the northern Willamette Valley. April brought one of our latest snows on record, with growers worried about frost damage. Thankfully, most vineyard sites set a generous crop which after a slow spring required thinning to encourage ripening. Temperatures finally warmed in August and September, but cool nights ensured adequate hangtime and flavor development. A string of sunny October days gave us the final ripening we desperately needed. Nearly every block of fruit was ready over a compressed two-week period, so the fruit arrived at peak ripeness during a very intense harvest season in the cellar. We expect our hard work to be rewarded with complex, fruit-forward wines.
